New housing project at mile 8
If there is one part of its manifesto that the People’s United Party government seems committed to, it is the pledge to build 10,000 houses. With a Cuban housing factory and low interest loans, the Ministry of Housing is making it possible for virtually anyone with a steady job to own their own home. Likewise private sector developers have started dozens of their own housing projects aided by the local banks, credit unions and DFC, all offering long term mortgages at a rate of around 12%. In short, if you can’t acquire a house in today’s market, chances are you never will. And if you’re ready to build now the government has embarked on a new project, this one designed for people who do not yet own their own lots. Crews have been working hard at mile 8 on the Western Highway to install streets, drains, electricity and water at the site. The area had previously been subdivided and lots assigned, but no infrastructure had ever been created. What Government has done is to reassign those leased lots which had not been developed and give them to people who are prepared to build now. According to a government release those people who have acquired titles to their lots or have already started construction will not be affected. Those who lose their leases will be given new leases on lots at alternate sites.
