“New Horizons” concludes in Stann Creek
They came, they worked hard and soon they’ll be gone but New Horizons 2000 will not be forgotten by thousands who will benefit from their labours. Reserve officers of the Louisiana National Guard have been in Belize for the past 4 months digging wells and building schools in the Stann Creek District. At the project’s closing ceremonies in Dangriga today, Minister of National Security, Jorge Espat and U.S. Ambassador Carolyn Curiel presented village representatives and school principals, who benefited from the project, with a small gift. The officials also took time out today to open the new school building at Holy Ghost Primary School. In New Horizons 2000, over 3,500 soldiers were in Belize on a rotational basis. According to estimates from the U.S. Embassy, over 4 million Belize dollars were injected into the Belize economy. 40 members of the Belize Defense Force also worked with the American soldiers on the project. Over 15 states plus Puerto Rico, were represented in New Horizons 2000.
