Women’s poetry showcased at cultural centre

Story Picture
I’ve heard men say the day they understand a woman, is the day they die. Well boys, understanding comes with listening and tonight, both men and women will be doing a lot of talking ABOUT women. The evening program, called “The Women’s Book of Woe and Wonder: A night of poetry and creative works,” will feature more than twenty four poets from all over the country, each with their piece to say on women. Program Organizer Gay Wilentz says, overall, the event will showcase some otherwise hidden Belizean talent.

Gay Wilentz, Program Organizer

“What we’re trying to do is to both give voice to both male and female poets and other writers to talk about the position of women but we also have a secondary interest in getting women writers out so we can do an anthology of women writers which we hope to do with Yasser Musa and the Image Factory. What of course we want to do is just have a tribute to women from different perspectives. We’re having people like Myrna Manzaranes who’s going to be reading Creole poetry. We’re going to be having some younger poets like Megan Fletcher, who’s a high school student and also Rohjani Perriott and Vonetta Burrell, who is also going to be one of our emcees. So we’re having all different kinds of age. We have people coming in Felicia Hernandez the Garifuna writer is coming in from Dangriga and Carrie Fairweather is coming in from Placencia so we’re having people come in from all over the country to present their feelings and their emotions on women.”

The program starts at seven thirty tonight at the Belize Mexico Institute on Newton Barracks. The event is free to the public and refreshments will be served. This presentation is being sponsored by the English Department, the Office of Student Enrollment and the Office of Development at the University College of Belize.
