Ambassador Mike Mena, dead at 52

He served under two different governments as Belize’s Ambassador to Guatemala. On Tuesday, after two months in the hospital, Mike Mena finally succumbed to cancer in the United States. The 52-year old Mena had been rushed to Houston in February, shortly after meeting the four Belizean law enforcement officers who were being held in Flores, Peten. He is survived by his wife Daphne Hoy Mena and sons Michael, Derrick and Christopher. An official funeral will be held on Monday May 8th in Belmopan at 2:00 p.m. Most of Belize’s other ambassadors will be returning to Belize for that service and an official delegation from the government of Guatemala is also expected to attend.
