Man arrested in baby’s death

A man has been arrested in connection with last Friday’s bizarre death of an 18-month old baby in Belize City. 34-year old Julian Velasquez has been charged with manslaughter by negligence and causing death by careless conduct in the killing of Santos Alvarez. Velasquez is the man who allegedly picked up a stick with a nail in it to hit a man who had insulted him. Instead of striking his intended victim, however, Velasquez’s blow landed on the baby the intended victim was carrying. The baby later died in the hospital. Police are still looking for the man holding the baby but will not release his name to the public, claiming that the DPP has forbidden it as a violation of his rights. Who is safeguarding the 18-month old baby’s rights is not clear at this time. Virtually all of those involved in this sad case are immigrants from Honduras. On Friday News Five identified the man holding the baby as Joseph “Mieto” Witty.
