Shooting Target Escapes Hail of Bullets in Belize City

There was a shooting in Belize City on Sunday evening but the intended target managed to escape unhurt. The man told police that he was standing on a street side when a vehicle drove up and someone fired shots towards him. Police say they seized the vehicle in the Saint Martin’s De Porres area and the driver is now in custody. Here’s more about the shooting incident from Officer in Charge of C.I.B Alejandro Cowo.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“Police responded to shots fired at Sea Gull Street, this was just minutes after four p.m. Upon arrival at Sea Gull police found several expended shells on the street side. They also met a male person who mentioned that while he was at the corner of Sea Gull Street, a vehicle just stopped and several shots were fired at his direction but fortunately he ran away and escaped unhurt. The vehicle was impounded along with the driver and he is presently detained at Raccoon Street Police Station.”

“Any information to know what motivated that shooting, sir?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“As we have been gathering, it can be something that is an ongoing rivalry between two groups in that area there.”

Late this evening, there was shooting here on Coney Drive just before five-thirty; the details are sketchy at this time, but News Five has confirmed that Alrick Smith had been shot to the head and rushed to the K.H.M.H.  The incident caused traffic to back up as police processed the scene. And then around news time, there are reports of several shooting incidents on the south side of Belize City. We’ll have more on these incidents in Tuesday’s newscast.
