Flood Warning for Central and Southern Belize
A flood warning is in effect for rivers, streams, creeks and waterways in central and southern Belize. The National Hydrological Services has issued a flood report and forecast which indicates that in certain rivers and waterways, water levels are steadily rising above normal. On the Belize River, water levels are above normal and rising and the same is happening on the Macal and Mopan Rivers. In southern Belize, there is minimal rise of water levels for Sittee River at Kendal Bridge, the Swasey and Bladen branch of Money River as well as the Rio Grande in San Pedro Columbia. Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon spoke of the threat of significant flooding as a result of the forecasted rainfall.
Ronald Gordon, Chief Meteorologist
“The threat from the system to Belize continues to be significant rainfall. We are forecasting rainfall totals of up to ten to twenty inches and higher amounts especially over central and southern portions of the country. This amount of rainfall could lead to significant flooding, flash flooding, widespread flooding of rivers and streams and along low-lying and flood prone areas as well. We are already starting to get rainfall; we have about one inch of rainfall already falling over some locations since midnight to about a few minutes ago when I last checked. That will continue to occur. We are expecting that rainfalls will actually pick up tomorrow afternoon and continue through Thursday, even Thursday night and Friday before we start to see a decrease in rainfall activity.”
