CitCo Clears Drains Along Mile 1½ George Price Highway

Meanwhile, the Belize City Council says that it is not sitting back while the situation gets worse. Councilor for Works Albert Vaughn recognizes that highways are the responsibility of the Ministry of Works, but says that the council has decided to unclog drains to alleviate the situation.

On the Phone: Albert Vaughn, Councilor, Belize City Council

“All major highways and the boulevard is the responsibility of the Ministry of Works but the George Price Highway seems to be a problem because there is a part of the road in front of the Inspiration Centre that keeps breaking up. It is breaking up because the water has nowhere to go. This water usually runs to Gungulung canal and then Krooman Lagoon. That area has been blocked off and so it has nowhere to go. So what we at the City Council did was to go out there and just dig drain so that the water can get off the road. That worked well yesterday but today has been another case. It is done by the B.D.F.  So what we were trying to do is try to get or work crew in that area as well and try to get off the water so as to comfort the motorists passing and even the people living there. A couple of weeks ago the City Council brought out a press release and on that same highway and both on Apollo Street in the Belama Street area. We have said that we are doing our best with the problem that exist in that area but you are right, it is the Ministry of Works responsibility but because it is our city we cannot just sit down and wait on them because it seems that they are not coming. That needs an excavator to dig drain to take back the water to Gungulung canal or behind Krooman.”
