Hope Creek Village is on Flood Watch!
In the south, a village that is closely monitoring the rising water level is Hope Creek. The area is known to experience flooding with heavy rain fall and the river is also known to spill onto the highway. But for now, Chairlady Le-keisha Staine tells us that while the river is higher than usual, the level isn’t threatening the residents. She says, however, that there are parts of the village that are accumulating water and at least two families have had to evacuate. Staine says that they are on stand-by to open the shelter if it is needed.
Le-keisha Staine, Chairlady, Hope CreeK Village
“The River is rising but not threatening the village as yet. We have some yards flooded with rain water because the drains are clogged up and the water is not running as it should. The people living there say they will be monitoring the rain and if need to evacuate they will let us know. It’s mostly in a particular area – by the burial ground side of the village – that side and the middle part of the village.”
“And if it continues, do you anticipate that some of the villagers will need to move out of their home?”
Le-keisha Staine
“Yes. They will need to evacuate once the rain continues and the water keeps rising – they will have to evacuate. We have the shelter on standby because we have some lots way to the back going to the farm land – some lots given out there and they don’t have drains per se but we have two families that evacuated from there but they are at family members because water reached into their house.”
