Mopan River Rises to Dangerous Level in Calla Creek
News Five journeyed to Calla Creek Village in the west today where Aurelio Sho responded to reports of a family in distress. The rising Mopan River snakes around Calla Creek causing many residences to flood. Some thirty-five families have been affected and had to move to higher ground. One family had to climb to their roof to avoid the flood waters. Rescuers, like Hugo Castaneda, were called in to assist. He says that the family preferred the assistance of NEMO.
Hugo Castaneda, Calla Creek Resident
“We got a call this morning that some people that needed some evacuation out here and we came in and assess the area. Apparently the people were waiting for NEMO and they just decided to stay until NEMO comes in to rescue them. Pretty much you can say that it was a worthless effort. The water is terribly high. We have some people that need to evacuate.”

“The water is already five to six feet inside our house. All of us – now we have to leave our house. Now we are sheltering; some families are sheltering in the hill.”
Rachel Martinez, Calla Creek Resident
“We lost almost everything. Being here is not easy. We need to socialize with other people. We need to make food. We lost almost everything. So it is not a good experience.”

“How many persons are in shelters?”
Virginia, Calla Creek Resident
“Like thirty-five people. We got in from yesterday. We got from two thirty and five thirty were here. So practically we were up all night. Water is rising too much, too fast. The condition on the other side is worse so this is nothing compared to what he people on the other side are living.”
