Briceño Says he Will Re-Open the Free Zone in time for Christmas

John Briceño

According to Briceño, if he becomes the next Prime Minister several things will change, especially as it relates to the COVID-19 restrictions. He says that there must be greater relaxations and he is promising to re-open the Corozal Free Zone in time for Christmas.

John Briceño, Leader, P.U.P.

“There is going to be jubilation on Wednesday, probably at home because you can’t be out there on the streets but Thursday when we take over that is when the real issues are going to be in front of us and we starting to plan. As I tell everyone I got my fifty dollars to give the Financial Secretary towards the forty-five million dollars wage bill when they tell me w need to find forty five million dollars. We know what is ahead of us and we are making plans as we speak as to how we will be addressing these issues. We need to ease up the restrictions in the tourism industry. The gold standard, a number of hoteliers have been complaining that it is too stringent but we cannot afford to be able to do the way we had.  I met with the people from the Free Zone on Sunday and I told them I am going to open the Free Zone so that they can have a Christmas season. Likewise we have to take the necessary precautions. So please we are not going to  be reckless but we have to be bold and we have to be able to say that we are going to open up. I already told the cattle ranchers that if we win tomorrow Thursday morning they can load up their cattle and they can sell all the cattle that they can to Guatemala. These steps are going to start to give that sense of optimism that things are going to happen. We don’t have the time. You are right. It is not time to sit down and try to reminisce. It is about work from day one.”
