Boy injured in bus knockdown
It’s a familiar script on Belizean roads and streets, the only variation being the climax of the final act. 13-year-old Jameel Torres appears to have escaped the grim reaper but tonight lies in a stable though guarded condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The teenager suffered head injuries and a deep cut to the knee after he was knocked down by a Novelo’s bus. The accident happened around 12:30 this afternoon at the corner of Kraal and Fabers Road. According to the bus driver, Alphine Jergenson, he was travelling up Fabers Road when he saw two boys on one bike. Jergenson says the boys dashed across the intersection in an attempt to beat the bus and the driver said he swerved to avoid hitting them. While Torres’s friend manage to jump off the bike in time, Torres was hit by the side of the bus. He was dashed to the pavement, lost consciousness and was rushed to the KHMH. Late this evening he reawakened but remains hospitalized in the pediatric ward. It is not certain if any charges will be brought against Jergenson but police have the matter under investigation.
