Chaplin was Gunned Down in the Dark, No Suspects Detained as Yet
Violence erupted in the Ladyville community on Monday night. Delroy Chaplin was gunned down as he approached his house. Police have said that it was the result of an alleged robbery that went wrong; but his wife admits that he was no saint and was a robber. Chaplain was waylaid by the gunman near his house. The motive according to her was a previous murder. But in 2019, the murder victim was charged with the armed robbery of Pacheco’s Jewelry Store on East Collet canal. Here is Isani Cayetano with a report.

The shooting death of Delroy Chaplin not far away from his home in Ladyville on Monday night was reportedly the result of an internal row over the proceeds of a crime that was committed by a group of individuals recently. That’s according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams who shared that information with the media during a press brief on Tuesday. His common-law-wife, however, shares a different theory as to the motive for the senseless killing.

“I noh know how dis soh sudden, but I know sohn nights ago one ah fi associate or one ah ih friend mi get shot pan Perez Road. So I seh maybe da di same thing, I don’t know. But I noh know weh happen, I neva expect nor he neva expect it cause he woulda neva go out if he woulda expect somebody deh behind ahn and I would neva mek ih go out if I mi think somebody di try kill he. But di lone way dehn shot up my bwai like ih heart.”
Chaplin is described by his common-law wife as a robber. His last run-in with the law dates back to October 2019 when he was charged for an armed robbery that took place at Pacheco’s Jewelry Store on East Collet Canal. He was one of two men who made off with over thirty-five thousand dollars in jewelry but was later caught by police on patrol in the area. ComPol Williams on Tuesday:
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“Around 8:10 p.m. or thereabout Ladyville police responded to shots fired on Perez Road, Ladyville. Upon arrival, they saw the lifeless body of a young man, Delroy [Chaplin] with gunshot injuries. He was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival. Information we gathered is that [Chaplin] left home to go and purchase weed or cannabis from someone not too far from where he lived and on his way back home he was ambushed and was shot. That matter we believed was the result of an internal dispute he had with a group that he is associated with. I‘m not going to go into much details in terms of why but we believe that it has to do with the proceeds of a crime and I‘ll leave it at that.”
According to Chaplin’s loved ones, he was waylaid behind a neighbor’s yard upon returning from purchasing a catch of marijuana. His common-law wife told News Five that the area where they live is poorly lit and because of that neighbors say they did not see what transpired in the dark.
“Between the shooting there was a pause and then dehn cohn and then afta dat then more gunshots come off and I think da when dehn stand up right ova ahn.”
