A Fisherman is Killed in Dangriga!

Roger Blanco

The second murder takes us to Dangriga where a twenty-one-year-old fisherman was shot and killed on nineteenth night.  Roger Blanco and another man were reportedly walking to a shop when two men approached them, one of whom fired shots in their direction.  The bullets caught Blanco as he ran away from the scene and later collapsed and died.  Here’s the story.

Twenty-one-year-old Roger Blanco was in the Back-a-Town area of Dangriga when he was killed on Thursday night. Reports are that Blanco and another man were walking together when the shooter fired the fatal shots.  Morris Martinez a resident in the area says he heard the shots ring out that night and recalls seeing persons fleeing the scene.

“I was right upstairs when I heard three gunshots and from there I opened my door and came on the verandah and saw two people running; three people – one going to the north and the other two people running to the south.”

Martinez says he didn’t see anything immediately after but almost two hours later he saw activity in the area.

“Immediately after an hour and a half to two hours, I saw people gathering around and I see the crime scene police were very attentive and they were at a spot in back-a-town by the basketball court and it was there that I found out somebody had gotten shot.   Somebody came and told me that he was there struggling and apparently when the police came an hour and a half after he supposed to have succumbed to his injury.”

Martinez says he doesn’t know what led to the murder but that his back-a-town neighborhood has developed a reputation for the sale of weed, as well as burglaries. He calls for increased police presence and patrols in the area.

“People usually come to this area here to release their stress; as a matter of fact, it is here, in this area here they supposedly sell cannabis and people usually come to buy. So, I personally don’t know what’s the matter but somebody must have been following him into this area here and then shot him.   If I was not from this area here, I would have left already because people come here and robbed me four times already; my tools; my furniture; other important things; my bicycles – three bicycles they have robbed from me from downstairs – break my door and get in. But apparently I am still alive and think I will continue until.”

“What do you think should be done in this area to alleviate the issues?”

Morris Martinez

“Police vigilance would be very important here because what I do know is that when the police come around and their vehicle come around things ceases. Everybody keep scarce from this area and they don’t be vigilant in my area and things happen. From the time they had robbed me the last time, the police were vigilant but now they seem to be a little scare so I am asking for police vigilance around back-a-town.”
