SJC’s triathlon raises funds and promotes healthy lifestyle

Story PictureSt. John’s College High School is promoting healthy lifestyles and fitness. And on Saturday, sixty of its students will be competing in the third annual triathlon. The event begins at six a.m. and will feature three disciples: swimming, cycling and running. The event is being held to raise funds for upcoming projects for the institution. Sports Coordinator, Kevin Thompson, says that the competition will benefit both SJC and its students.

Kevin Thompson, Sports Coordinator, SJC High School
“We are raising funds to accomplish small improvement projects around the campus that otherwise could not be able to occur without the funding. For this year we are trying to build a deck next to the chapel and this deck will serve to provide a recreational area for our students. In addition to that we will also plan to erect two statues—one of the Virgin Mary and one of Jesus Christ and this would further promote our Catholic identity.”

“With the triathlon itself, what will the students be doing?”

Kevin Thompson
“For the triathlon, there are three events. The first event would be swimming and it’s a three hundred meter swim. That would be followed by cycling and that is approximately twelve miles and then for the running it’s approximately three miles.”

Jose Sanchez
“The swimming, where will that be taking place?”

Kevin Thompson
“The swimming will start off the pier that comes off marine parade and it will end off at the Mexican institute on Barrack Road. The cycling will go up Princess Margaret Drive, and then it will turn on to Coney Drive and then it will turn back to the Mexican Institute for three laps.”
