Escaped prisoner shot, captured by police

By all accounts it was an interesting and complicated operation. After nearly six weeks on the run, police have recaptured prisoner Darrel “Bagga” Jones. But Jones isn’t going to be at the Hattieville Ramada for a while, at least not until he recovers from bullet wounds to his backside. Police say around nine thirty this morning, they visited an address on East Collet Canal where they found Jones’ common law wife. She denied knowing “Bagga’s” whereabouts but, quite unexpectedly, Bagga himself stepped out of the house.

Christy Castillo, Police Public Relations Officer

“While we were talking to the common law wife, Mr. Jones stepped out of the house. We immediately told him that we were here to search him for firearms and we would arrest him for escape because that’s what he was wanted for. He ran towards the house, an officer caught up with him and while detaining him, the wife jumped on his back actually to attack the officer. They grabbed a knife, a switchblade knife, a wooden handle, five inches long and tried to stab at the police officer. The police officer dodged the stab and let go of Bagga and tried to calm down the common law wife. This time, Bagga ran, tried to climb over the fence and in the process, he was ordered to stop and that he was arrested. He continued climbing at the top of the fence, an officer fired a shot and caught him in the posterior.”

A woman who claims to be the only eyewitness to the incident told News Five that this was definitely one time the police did everything according to the rules. She says the officers were, in her words, “humble” to both Jones and his wife even after they attacked them and says Jones was given every opportunity to accompany the officers peacefully. Jones’ common law wife has been detained by police and could be charged with obstruction of justice. Darrel Jones remains at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a stable condition. On February 18th, Jones and two other prisoners escaped from police custody as they were being escorted to Magistrate’s Court. Jones was serving 3 years for theft and had appeared in court in early February to face charges for the attempted murder of his cellmate. The other two prisoners were recaptured shortly after their escape.
