What’s the answer for Chiquibul Incursions?

And on the topic of border issues – the planned incursions and attacks in the Chiquibul are still a problem today. As we’ve shown you before, there are Guatemalans who are conducting cattle ranching in Belizean territory, as well as poaching wildlife and extracting other materials. The Friends for Conservation and Development who are co-managers have been documenting these incursions but as they’ve reported, it’s impossible for them to patrol the vast expanse and rugged terrain of the Chiquibul. So, what will the new ministers do to address this pressing issue? Here’s what C.E.O.  Dario Tapia had to say:

Dario Tapia, CEO, Ministry of Defence & Border Security

Dario Tapia

“As it pertains to goal number two, those directions will be given to the Belize Defence Force. If we need to increase patrols to regain control back of that area we will do so and it is all our intention to ensure that we control that area. As you are aware, we also work that area with Friends for Conservation and Development. A few days ago, I was in communication with Mr. Manzanero and yes we will address and have control of that area.”

Andrea Polanco

“Sir, one of the complaints we have heard from them is that the area is just too big and there are some areas that are just too remote to access; is there any plan in terms of using technology out there if it is possible – perhaps just employing different strategies because the boots on the ground – it’s simply not enough?”

Dario Tapia

“Yes. We have to think outside the box because there is only limited man power that we have. If we have to acquire drones to fly that area, I think we will look into that possibility. The accessibility to that area, if the government has the resources, there were plans in the past to push a road into the Chiquibul to be able to traverse that area quicker and easier then that is what we are going to address. If we have to rehabilitate the old Da Silva airstrip to ensure that we are able to land our defender and be able to insert more troops more quickly, then that is what is going to happen.”
