Tackling Illegal Guats and Border Issues

And so Ministers Marin and Mira are the two Government Ministers tasked with tackling the long standing and thorny border issues – especially as it relates to illegal entry. At the heart of this growing problem are Guatemalans who enter the country illegally through our very porous borders. Today, we asked Tapia what will be their approach to dealing with this national security and sovereignty issue?

“Well, I will tell you, and I as a former commander of the Belize Defence Force I am well in tuned of how we deal with the Guatemalan incursions. We have to understand that there are some protocols that we have to follow what was negotiated with the O.A.S. and we can’t stray away from that. So, we will continue maintaining and respecting those protocols because in the eyes of the international community we have to deal with those issues based on those protocols. However, as our new mandate and as you probably picked up, we were also given the mandate of border security.  As we review our goal number two, if we have to put more personnel to ensure that we address those issues we will do that.”
