School explores tourism in Open Day

The adults in the industry may have been promoting tourism awareness last week, but today some Belize City primary school students explored the topic in their open day. It wasn’t the only item on the agenda, which impressed the parents as well as fellow classmates. News Five was invited to view the display.

The students of Wesley Middle Primary School put away their schoolbooks and pulled out the displays they have been working on for over a month to exhibit at the school’s annual open day.

The displays depicted the tourism industry and the citrus industry of Belize. The students told us about their exhibition and the different ways in which some fruits can be used.

Cindy Cattouse, 9 years old

“The display that I did was a module and my module is…me and my mother worked on the module. We made the citrus industry that has the Big H juice factory and the nursery where the plants nurse when they are little and the farm where they grow.”

Sherwin Garcia, 9 years old

“The lime can be a medicine. You add water with some lime juice and sugar for when you have cold or headache and the lime can be a great handwasher when you eat fish.”

It was a fun time for everyone. Even the parents who took the time out to support their children were impressed with what they saw.

One mother agreed that parents need to get more involved with their children’s education.

“Yes it is very important because it shows just how much you love your child and how much you are interested in them.”

“And my father sent some lemon tarts for my class too, to help me get a higher grade.”

“Well I have toured another class already. I see that the children, the job that they are doing is very good. Especially the promotion on tourism because everything looks very real and you can get a good understanding from what they are showing.”
