Gilbert Swaso is the New Port Authority Commissioner
Gilbert Swaso is the new Commissioner of the Belize Port Authority. According to a release from the Government Press Office, Swaso is a renowned maritime expert and certified master marine surveyor who served twenty-four years in the Belize Defence Force. The Retired Major has also served as the Deputy Ports Commissioner and Operations Manager at the Belize Port of Authority. Swaso completed infantry studies in England and later graduated from the United States Coast Guard Officer Candidate School. Upon acceptance of his appointment, Swaso said, “I am honored and excited to have been selected to lead this esteemed organization. I look forward to working with the employees of the Belize Port Authority, whilst maintaining a harmonious relationship with the maritime community and stakeholders to ascertain safety of life at sea and the maritime environmental protection.” Minister of Public Utilities and Logistics, Rodwell Ferguson and the Chairman of the Belize Port Authority’s Board of Directors Retired Major Lloyd Jones laud the appointment of Major Swaso, citing that his track record and work with the maritime community make him the right candidate for the job. Gilbert Swaso takes over from Merlene Bailey-Martinez who retired after seven years.
