Fly fishing taught in Belize River Valley
Creating a sustainable industry was also part of a workshop in fly fishing techniques in Rancho Dolores and St. Paul’s Bank in the Belize River Valley last week. The training is to help those communities take advantage of opportunities in the tourism industry. It included sessions on techniques as well as guiding skills and was a joint venture on the part of Programme for Belize and the Toledo Institute for Development and the Environment, TIDE. This is the first time fly fishing is being promoted in the River Valley and according to Programme for Belize, the sport’s emphasis on “catch and release” makes it valuable tool for conserving local resources. Instructors were Wil Maheia, Wayne Castellanos and Victor Cuevas. The workshop was funded by the World Bank through the Sustainable Development Project of Programme for Belize.
