Injured child may have history of abuse
A child injured over the weekend at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend has still not fully regained consciousness and remains at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Hospital officials tell News Five, 2-year-old Adrian Smith was able to sit up today and is showing signs of further improvement, but is not completely normal. Perhaps more disturbing about this case is that this is the second time the infant has had to be admitted to the KHMH. When he was eight months old, doctors treated him for severe malnutrition. He was covered with skin lesions. According to the doctors, they called Social Services at that time because they suspected the child was being neglected. However, when we spoke to Social Services, they told us they had no record of Adrian Smith’s case. Police say they tried to find the child’s mother today, and were unable to locate her, but believes she is still in Belize City. The toddler suffered a concussion after 39 year old Eugene Neal picked him up by his ankles and slammed him into the ground to stop the child from crying. Neal has since been arrested and charged with Dangerous Harm. He is the live in boyfriend of the baby’s mother.
