Surveillance Camera Installed After Deadly Shooting at Auto Shop

A surveillance camera overlooking Saint Martin’s One Stop Auto Care on Partridge Street Extension has been mounted on a lamppost in the wake of a deadly shooting incident over the weekend.  Police are yet to make an arrest in the murder of Terrence King which happened on Saturday evening when a white SUV emerged on the scene and an occupant of that vehicle opened fire on the mechanics at the auto shop.  Five persons were injured, including King who lost his life in the shooting.  Exactly one week ago, the United States Embassy, as part of its New Community Resource Hub initiative, launched the small business along with the Love and Kolbe foundations and a handful of young men as a way for them to stay out of trouble as reformed gang members.  The deadly assault has left the neighborhood reeling and has prompted the installation of a surveillance camera nearby.  But is it too little too late?

Voice of: Jermaine Garnett, Shooting Victim

“Mr. Williams seh ih wahn sih if ih could cohn try put up wahn camera eena di areas and try sih if ih could put wahn police booth down the street.  We noh di beg fi protection, we could protect wihself, yoh check, but da problem wih noh wahn.  Dat da di reason why wih noh wahn mind if dehn do certain things cause we noh really into problem, yoh check, but di next crowd into problem or whosoever or whatever how ih happen.  Da soh life go we wahn try protect fu we self.  If di man could throw een di booth, throw een di camera or whateva, but like weh ah tell dehn, ih always wait ‘til a problem staat fi mek dehn wahn chip een.  Dehn coulda mi chip een long before dehn thing staat to tek place.  When yoh sih sohnting di happen yoh haffi got, da you or certain mind set ahn thing fi help from one time.  Yoh cyant wahn help when ih late.  When time things done flare off dehn yoh di help fi mek di next set try noh flare off nothing.  Dehn time deh ih always rough.  That’s why if yoh know yoh wahn help yoh haffi staat from one time early soh dat certain things cyant happen eena life.”
