Missing Fisherman’s Sister Speaks Up About His Disappearance

Yasmine Morgan

This afternoon, the elder sibling of missing fisherman Jeffery Gomez spoke with News Five.  According to Yasmine Morgan, her brother had only just relocated to Dangriga three weeks ago and was last seen on Southern Long Caye with a family whom he was staying with on the island.  Gomez, we understand, caught a ride with three other fishermen on a vessel called Sea Life.  When they failed to arrive in Dangriga, the common-law wife of Omar Thompson, reported to police that he, along with two others, including Brenton Brackett and Leon Joseph, was unaccounted for.  Shani Alvarez was unaware that a fourth person had joined them on the return trip.  Morgan told us this evening that she was made aware of their disappearance on a social media post over the weekend.

“My bredda just move da Stann Creek like three weeks ago and di last time we talk to he da December 3rd.  We mi know ih phone mi di give trouble soh we mi feel like when he noh di contact we di phone mussi noh di work noh moh.  And Saturday, we sih wahn Facebook post stating that four guys went missing out at sea and he was one of them.  We then tried to call and gather information to see what happened and the same lady that posted on the Facebook page we then got in contact with her and she told us that on the eleventh, which I believe was a Friday, he asked the three guys who went to fishing on the island, I believe that said day and were returning back inland that same day for a ride.  So he was just hiking, so just not that he was hiking.  He wasn‘t with the three guys who went fishing, he was already with a family there fishing and then it looked like he asked for a ride to go back inland.  I believe that the wife of one of the three missing guys then notified, I believe they didn‘t reach land, reach Dangriga at the time they expected him to reach and then one of the common-law wife of the missing guy reported the missing person, but she didn‘t mention my brother because she didn‘t know he was with them because he was just hitchhiking back.  So we then went to Dangriga Monday to try to give a report that he was missing because we see pictures being posted but no was there for him, so we tried to go to give a missing person‘s report so we can give them a picture and give them his age because he is not from there so they don‘t really know much about him.”
