Adolphus returns to run the prison
They say that nobody is indispensable, but that saying does not seem to apply to Bernard Adolphus. The man who was relieved of his duties as head of the Hattieville Prison less than a year ago is back. His new title is Prison Governor, but the man the media came to know simply as “The Supe” will run things at the Ramada. Superintendent Jennifer Lovell, retains her title but will in fact focus her efforts on rehabilitation and counseling. At the same time Major Errol Gentle is moving up from Assistant Superintendent to Deputy Superintendent, while Kevin Cadle is now Acting Assistant Superintendent. The personnel moves come as a result of an epidemic of prison violence, including murders, stabbings and escapes. Adolphus served as Superintendent for over twenty years, from the days when the prison was on Gaol Lane in Belize City and prisoners made bread instead of trouble. Adolphus is no stranger to controversy however, as his management style was unorthodox and the rules seemed to bend with the occasion. He did maintain order however and the prison population by and large seemed comfortable with their chief jailer. Whether this good will can be restored is uncertain. Rumour has it that as early as tonight; he might have the help of a tamarind whip. News Five understands that the reinstitution of whipping prisoners as punishment for violent acts behind the walls was recommended by the visiting justices and approved by corrections minister Dickie Bradley.
