Mexico offers passes to Chetumal

If you want to go to Merida, Cancun or any other Mexican city past Chetumal you will still need a tourist visa, but last week the Mexican Government implemented a pass system they hope will make traveling to Chetumal a little easier. The Mexican Embassy says Belizeans can now obtain a pass, which allows them to stay in their car or on the bus when they enter Mexico and not have to get out at Mexican Immigration. Those eligible include all adults and minors over 15, who have authorization from their parents or guardians. Younger students, who commute on a daily basis to study in Chetumal can also obtain a pass. The embassy says for the time being Belizeans can bring their documents to the border to apply for a pass which they should get the same day; in the nearby future they will be available at Mexico’s embassies in Belize City and Belmopan and the Honorary Consul in Corozal. You can call the Mexican Embassy in Belize City for detailed information on what you need to present. However, Belize’s Immigration Department says they are considering adopting a similar system but until they do, all Belizeans still need to present their passports or permits at the Belize border and have these stamped, even if they have a Mexican pass.
