Black Rock first in Ruta Maya race

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderly and you’re strapped in for this rough ride of Sports Monday. St. John’s College have remained the undefeated powerhouse in the Central division of High School Basketball through regular season and the playoffs and were certainly the favorite to grab game one of the three game championship series against E. P. Yorke at the Civic Center Friday night.

It’s midway through the first half and the Landivar Boys, already up by seven points get two more high off the glass from Ryan Leslie who will finish with the game high of eleven points.

E.P. Yorke comes back when Anthony Saunders gets this long pass downcourt to Darwin Trujeque who delivers. If you’re into the left-hand shot, tell us how you rate this beauty from Judale Usher, which gives SJC two more points and at the half Mathew Smiling’s boys show a nine-point lead.

In the second half play SJC go to this big man Englebert Cherrington and he slams it home. At the other end the put back by Jamir Campbell falls for two. And then Joshua Usher handles things under the hoops for two points more but it’s just too much SJC today. When Lindsberg Graham stays with this play to get on the scoreboard it says all SJC. The Landivar guys take game one 43-33 with game two set for Wednesday night.

Turning to football news, the National Team of Belize suffered its worst loss to date on the international scene in a five-zip blowout by El Salvador. If I were a betting man I’d say the head-coach Bilches has finally hit rock bottom.

Finally folks, the Ruta Maya wound its way through the heartland and into one hearts of Belizeans taking four days and encompassing two rivers with some 54 teams participating. We take you to the finish line at the Belcan Bridge here in Belize City on Monday.

Janelle Chanona, Reporting

“What was the strategy to finishing up with such a commanding lead?”

Leroy Romero, Team Black Rock, 2000 Champions, Ruta Maya

“Courage, I guess.”

Janelle Chanona

“You felt you had strong competition from the “White Dolphin” team?”

Leroy Romero

“Yeah they’re good enough. But on the long stretch, better they stay in the back.”

Join us later this week right here on Channel Five when Janelle Chanona tells you through an in depth look at this event. Stay tuned.
