Barry Bowen in weekend accident

He is one of Belize’s leading businessmen and today Barry Bowen and the three passengers in his vehicle are lucky to be alive. On Sunday, Bowen, who is a senator and Managing Director of Bowen and Bowen Limited was admitted to the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami after being flown from Belize to the United States by air ambulance. Around midnight on Saturday, Bowen was travelling from Placencia to his nearby shrimp farm along with his son Kevin, Johnny Roberson, an employee of the shrimp farm and Robert Patula, a friend who was visiting from the United States. Reports are that the vehicle, a Jeep Wrangler, was about a mile away from Bowen’s farm when it slipped off a small bridge and overturned. Fortunately another vehicle which was travelling on the same stretch of road came upon the accident only a few minutes after it happened and took all the occupants to the farm. There a British Forces Helicopter and a Tropic Airplane transported the men to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. On Sunday evening, the Bowens and Roberson were flown to Miami and on Monday Barry underwent two and a half hours of surgery to repair three fractured vertebrae in his neck. The operation was successful and the beer and soft-drink magnate is expected to be released from the hospital by the end of the week. Meanwhile Roberson, who suffered multiple fractures to the ribs and one shoulder, will not need surgery but remains hospitalized. Kevin Bowen, who received a fractured tailbone, is recuperating in the U.S and Patula, believed to be the only one wearing a seatbelt, received minor abrasions and took a commercial flight back home on Monday.
