Guatemalan flag stolen from roundabout
Someone apparently is so disturbed by the detention of Belizean men in Guatemala that he, or she, has taken the liberty of removing the Guatemalan flag from the monument at the Pallotti Roundabout. When asked about the incident, a spokesperson for Barclays Bank says the bank is no longer responsible for the flags because they have turned the monument over to the Belize City Council. However, the City Council says that since Barclays donated the monument to the city, they are still responsible for it. They say they would only do something to the grounds if the bank asked them too. Neither party was aware that the blue and white Guatemalan flag was gone. The City Council said one pole was vacant before because they were waiting for another Caribbean country, Haiti, to complete the process of joining Caricom. The Scouts Association of Belize is responsible for raising and lowering the flags each day. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the flag is asked to call the Scouts or the police. And another unfortunate result of the tensions between the two countries is the cancellation by the National Footballs Association of the World Cup qualifying match between Belize and Guatemala that was scheduled for March nineteenth at the Ricalde Stadium in Orange Walk. The BNFA says security is the primary concern. The BNFA says if the tensions ease, they are proposing to play the game in Belize on the 21st of May and on the 5th of June in Guatemala. If there is no resolution by then, the organization is suggesting they play on neutral ground, perhaps in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
