Sports Minister to Rehabilitate and Upgrade the People’s Stadium

Kevin Bernard

We also asked Minister Kevin Bernard about the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town. The facility was used regularly for sporting and other big events, but since COVID-19, it has hardly been used, but when the Minister made a visit there, he realized that it has hardly been maintained. Bernard says the facility was so abandoned that it will take serious work to bring it back to its original state.

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Sports

“I believe that as a young child growing up and yourself Hipolito you would know that that was one of the landmark area when it comes to sports in this country. It really upsets me when I went there to see the disgraceful condition of the People’s Stadium but it is not only the People’s Stadium. There are other facilities across this country, the Ricalde Stadium in Corozal, there are some facilities in the Benque and San Ignacio area that have been left abandoned. I mean there was no interest in trying to ensure that at least the maintenance of these facilities. I understand that there were no sporting because of COVID, but you could have at least try to maintain the facilities to a lever that is you are easily able to go back to work with. We have to start all of these things all over. The People’s Stadium will take us at least two, three times to go and maintain to try and get at least to get the grass to grow at a level so it can be properly maintained and so under the new fiscal year we are putting our budgetary proposals.”
