N.G.O. Senator Says There Are Lots of Benefits from Hemp

Senator Osmany Salas says there are many benefits that can be derived from hemp.  According to Salas, the Belize Network of N.G.O.s has not formalized an official position on the matter yet, but says his only concern is that the small farmers may be left behind.

“The Belize Network of N.G.O.s does not have a position on the matter currently, but I can tell you that when the matter of the decriminalization of up to ten grams of marijuana came up in this National Assembly, in Senate which is supported by the way, I still raised some serious concerns that were stated by a number of different agencies as to Belize’s preparedness in a number of areas, mental health in particular ff and when marijuana is legalized. I am not talking about marijuana not hemp but hemp there are a lot of benefit from hemp. A concern there is to ensure that this is not only for the big man but small farmers also have a stake in that. So there is a lot of work to do on that yet and at some point soon the BNN will have a position on that. We don’t have one at this time.”
