Yabra beats Sagitun in overtime

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderly and you’re right on time for a new dish of Sports Monday. The two league leaders from regular season play in the BFL football competition, continues their battle for supremacy all the way into the playoffs. While Sagitun has not beaten Kulture Yabra all season long, the team from the south felt they had the inside shot despite being the guest at the MCC Grounds yesterday.

Because it’s a battle of equals, the first honest attempt at goal comes some fifteen minutes deep; when Benedict Lopez beats the defense for a shot at Willie Bo, but takes too long to pull the trigger as the defense recovers.

However, it’s Yabra with the perfect opportunity to score when Norman Nunez gets taken down just inside the eighteenth. Referee David Jones of Cayo rules penalty. Yabra sends for Estevan Hall and guess what folks? The midfielder misses his third consecutive big time penalty kick when Darren Hinds reads him right.

Meanwhile, would you book goalkeeper Hinds for this very weak move in which David “Manu” McCauley embarrassed him with a goal and Yabra celebrates. Of course if one good turn deserves another, then it’s Willie Bo returning the favour, kicking this ball to Brendt Burgess who make him pay by tying the score at one a piece.

Still Brendt Burgess presses and he thinks he deserves a penalty here, but referee Jones wouldn’t have it. So the Independence team goes to Carrol Cadle and he gets all the way in front of Willie Bo only to make the goalkeeper look good. At the half, we have a one-one ball game.

In early second half action, Brendt Burgess gives Cadle a chance to run. Peter Canul in an effort to clear the ball gives the ball back to Burgess and just like that, Sagitun takes a two-one lead.

Yabra then mounts a serious pressure in search of the equalizer and half an hour into the half. This shot by Peter Canul is misplaced by Darren Hinds and yes it’s a two-two ballgame.

So we’re forced into sudden death overtime under the golden rule. Had this ball reached into the net, this ballgame would have been over in favour of Sagitun. The end nevertheless, comes without warning. Tilliman finds David “Manu” McCauley, who one touches and fires to give Yabra the three-two big W.

In other BFL games played yesterday, Grigamandala traveled up north and got two goals from Malakai Nolberto to stun La Victoria two-zip.

Turning to volleyball news, division two competition play at the Civic Center on Saturday February 19th saw in female play. BH Little Stars rallying pass Lady Scorpions: 25-22, 11-25, 15-10. In the male division, Cayo Wolverines knocked off Bombers: 25-20, 25-21. Corozal did a number on Sagitun: 25-26, 22-24. Scorpions flew pass Tropic Air Flyers: 25-20, 26-24.

Meanwhile folks, this week is a very big week of sports in Belize, especially for the sport of boxing as the Belize Amateur Boxing Association plays host to the Copa Maya, featuring Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and of course the host country Belize. This action takes place at the Civic Center; each country presents nine boxers. Each fight class will produce a gold, a silver, and two bronze medals. It’s about time Belize gets gold, so Belize remember to rally and support behind your fighters representing you in this Copa Maya at the Civic Center.

Finally, we want to tell you that Saturday morning; Glenn Tillett replaced John Saldivar as President of the Belize National Basketball Association. Philip Waight replaced Clyde Young as Secretary.
