Flags fly at roundabout
In September, Barclays Bank announced it would be celebrating fifty years in Belize by giving the city of Belize a present: a monument at the Pallotti Roundabout. This weekend Barclays’ vision became a reality as the Belizean flag went up, for the first time surrounded by the flags of the Caricom nations and the countries of Central America. The Prime Minister commended the effort at dedication ceremonies on Sunday.
Said Musa
“This flag monument is a fitting symbol of the past fifty years of progress and achievement. It symbolizes the reality of the sovereign independent nation of Belize, in Central America, in the heart of the Caribbean region. Our blue, white and red flag, flies proudly among the flags of the Commonwealth Caribbean nations, that are members of Caricom and the flags of the Central American Isthmus, from Mexico to Panama. It tells us that Belize, this young democracy, from the Hondo to the Sarstoon, from the majestic Maya mountains to the west, to the beautiful coral islands in the east, is here to stay as a land of the free by the Carib Sea. In the life of a nation, there are some issues, which are bigger than party politics. Our flag of freedom is a constant remainder of that fact.”
Jorge Omar Espejo, Country Manager, Barclays Bank
“the structure you see before you, has been built on foundations that represent fifty years of our banks involvement and participation in the financial and economic development of Belize.”
The project cost an estimated three hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars, with Barclays contributing eighty thousand. The remainder was provided through contributions from the business community.
