Senate Ratifies Appointment of E & B Commission Members
And while the Senate deferred the second readings of those bills, the Senate did ratify the appointment of members of the Elections and Boundaries Commission. Oscar Sabido will chair the Commission, and its members include Orlando Espat, Phillipa Bailey, Conrad Lewis, and Alberto August. They will serve a term for five years, which was one of the concerns expressed by N.G.O. Senator Osmany Salas.
Osmany Salas, Senator for N.G.O.s
“I notice in this motion for appointment of members for Elections and Boundaries Commission. It is to be a period for five years. I would prefer to see a shorter period knowing that the intention is that during that time we would seriously look at reforming the electorate system, looking at how we can put in place an independent, well resources commission.”
Michael Peyrefitte, Lead U.D.P. Senator
“Unlike Senator Salas I don’t necessarily a difficulty with the five years. If you want see serious number of changes then you have to have, give people time to develop policy, to develop strategies and I wouldn’t worry the five years. Initially I would say I worry about the five years Madam President because they would take them to February first 2026 but I am sure the chairman would do the right thing and resign on November twelfth, 2025.”
