Celebrating the Chinese New Year in Belize during COVID-19
The dragon dance is among the many activities done annually to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Belize, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festive occasion has gone virtual. Every year, across the city, you would at some point witness the spectacle as the performing team stopped in at Chinese businesses. This year is going virtual in an attempt to keep the tradition alive. News Five spoke with Secretary Wallace Shu of the All-China Federation of Overseas Taishanese about the activities.

“This year, due to COVID-19, everybody has to keep quarantine and then we have to keep social distance. It is a big difference this year because normally we go around the city and go to all shops and we do the dragon dance. As you know the dragon dance is one of the Chinese tradition and so even though COVID-19 is here, we have to keep the tradition flowing. So we are doing regular dragon dance to show everybody through the videos so everybody could still celebrate it together, but everybody celebrate it at home.”
