History in the Making in Belmopan as a Woman Will Become Its Next Mayor

Sharon Palacio

A woman is likely to become the next mayor of the capital city of Belmopan. Today, former city councilor and now P.U.P.’s mayoral candidate Sharon Palacio officially secured her name on the ballot for the March third municipal elections. Flanked by her slate, consisting of three women and three men, and area rep Oscar Mira, Palacio says that she is confident that Belmopan residents will elect them to office.

“Politics is not an easy road, especially for women because we are living in a patriarchal society, but I can see that the wave has changed because for Belmopan it is going to be two females and we are looking forward for a big win and we are putting in the work. Our slogan is a change from the heart because at this time, along with the pandemic, we have a lot of people who have lost hope and our role will be to light that candle in the darkness and ensure that our people are pleased. People power is power. We are here to make a difference, a big difference whereby the people will see what we are doing. And whenever you come to city hall Duane, you won’t have to make an appointment. Our doors, the mayor’s office will remain open just as I did at the University of Belize.  I will not say anything negative about Jackie; I consider ourselves friends, but when it comes to the battlefield, we’re going to battle. Let’s go for it March third; the people will decide. And I can safely share with you that the people want a change. And if you have a central government favouring our party, the People’s United Party, it is just right – and I shouldn’t say it is just right, but we are the people’s choice.”
