“Cowboy” charged with Murder and a slew of other charges
He came out of the water blazing with two guns after leaving behind a dead business man and several injured officers, but tonight the former cop turned outlaw, Kevin “Cowboy” Alvarez, has been remanded to the Hattieville prison. Since Saturday night’s chase in Orange Walk, Alvarez has been under police guard at the Northern Regional Hospital for a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was slapped with over eighteen charges when he appeared this afternoon at Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court. Officer Commanding Orange Walk Police Station, Superintendent Joseph Myvett listed some of the charges which included one count of murder and four counts of attempted murder of police officers.

“At the time that Mr. Alvarez was captured, the two weapons were with him. Certainly, there were some information of another person who we are talking to but there is no indication that that person will be on any of those charge sheets.”

“Mr. Bradley has said that the police was in a rush to get Mr. Alvarez out of the hospital but he still requires medical attention. But because the police knew that they had to do this very quickly, he was taken out not the proper way.”

“That is not the case. The police has no authority to go to the hospital and release anyone. What I know is that from earlier this morning, the hospital authorities had called saying that Mr. Alvarez he would be released on today. Earlier this week, around Wednesday, it was the same thing; they had said that he would be released on Friday.”

“I think what has happened is that the sensational nature of the crime that occurred, the terrible killing of the person on the fourteenth and the fact that the police was under pressure in Orange Walk and what they have done is to bring sixteen charges. We were just making the observation that if you go by what they themselves are saying that they discovered a person, who they claim they shot, that they found firearms in the vicinity. So how can the person have kept unlicensed firearm and kept unlicensed ammunition when they themselves didn’t find him with it. They themselves are saying that. That’s what they’re telling us. But it is to add an additional four more charges so that it sounds like bwai dehn really got the correct man and they bring all the charges gens ah. So we’re really making that observation that if you say that there were more than one persons involved in this serious offense, then why is it that the charge sheet is not reflecting that the person you’re alleging that you have caught along with others? That is an observation that my colleague Kevin Arthurs was making. You need to show some observation that what you are telling the public is what is happening in fact when you come to court.”
Alvarez joined the police force in 1996 and was discharged in 2001 for his behavior. He was reinstated by the Police Advisory Council in 2002. But in 2003 Cowboy also faced a murder charge for the homicide of Albert Pennil which occurred near Friendship restaurant.
