Santino’s comes in first in Merida cycle race

Story Picture
?Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into another serving of Sports Monday. The Santino’s Jamis Cycling Team was invited to participate in yesterday’s one hundred-mile road race inside Merida, Yucatan across the Mexican Border so we tagged along.

At the starting line we find Andrew Smiling and Ray Cattouse suited up in Santino’s colors after joining forces with the Jamis for this international outing. And yes, it?s a sea of color when some fifty riders take off at the sound of the starting gun. Ten miles in, a five-man breakaway established a legitimate lead featuring; Andrew Smiling, Ray Cattouse and three Mexicans. Included is the deadly Darwin Torres Irola, Rafael Castillo and a rider for the Corona team. Behind the lead pack, Ariel Rosado, Francisco “the animal” Flores and Mateo Cruz try to bridge the gap. Halfway through, the rider from Corona gets dropped and it happens right here reducing the lead bunch to four. There are four entering Valladolid for the big finish.

Unfortunately, as the riders hug the curve for the finish line, this red car comes out of nowhere. Andrew Smiling pulls out the afterburners, which propels him into the winning circle. Darwin Torres Irola hangs on for second, after Ray Cattouse had no room to maneuver and had to settle for third. Rafael Castillo pulls up fourth.

Meanwhile it’s Mateo Cruz up off his bike to grab fifth place, forcing team captain Francisco “the animal” Flores into sixth, while Ariel Rosado rounds out the top seven. We say good show to the Jamis Team and now look forward to the Valentine Day Cycle Classic scheduled for February thirteenth.

Turning to the football scene, the B.T.L. playoffs gets underway this Sunday February sixth. Kulture Yabra plays host to Real Verdes at the M.C.C. grounds and the San Pedro Dolphins will be at home against Grigamandala of Dangriga. Meanwhile, Sagitun burned Ambergris Turquoise one-zip at the Island yesterday on a goal by Brent Burgess, to become the number two seed on goal average and will face La Victoria on the twelfth of February, because of the CONCACAF game against Communicaciones at Guatemala this Wednesday night.

Jah over all. I?m James Adderley.?
