Investigation into Spending of B.T.B. Pension Fund Continues

Did the previous board of the Belize Tourism Board dip into the pension fund to pay salaries last year? Allegations are that over four hundred thousand dollars in pension funds was used for this purpose between July and November 2020. Current Chairman Evan Tillett tells News Five that Tourism Director Karen Bevans and former B.T.B. Chair Einer Gomez are not the only ones whose actions are facing scrutiny.

“The investigation is not only on the director. The investigation is of the pension plan and the monies that were used from the pension plan. Currently we are in a position where we are getting legal advice on the matter and as soon as we get that legal advice we will make a decision on the way forward.”

“I understand that you are heading the investigation. What has been unearthed so far as to what happened with the pension fund?”

“Basically because it is under investigation and we are awaiting legal advice, I cannot give you that information at this time. So once we get that information, we will definitely share that with the media.”

“Sir multiple persons involved in what I understand is being deemed as the mismanagement of that pension fund?”

Evan Tillett

“Well it is a pension fund that is run by trustees and so the trustee is made up of the director, the then chairman and employees from the board. So those are the four people that we are looking at.”
