South Korea to Help Improve Belize’s Public Transport System

Overcrowding, ticketing, erratic schedules and buses that have seen better days have long plagued our country’s public transportation system and caused headaches for commuters.   Now, Belize may be getting some help from a country that also had to modernize its own transport system, South Korea.  Today, the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics announced a technical cooperation program with South Korea with funding from the International Development Bank.  Components of the project include a full policy and legal review and update of Belize’s public transit system, including improved bus routing, scheduling and ticketing systems. Management and supervision of the public transportation system will also be improved through training and institutional upgrades.  The project will be led by the newly established Transport Planning Unit that includes transportation planner Eric Sanchez and administrative officer Trudy Joseph.  The technical agreement grows out of recommendations made in the 2017 national transportation master plan, also funded by the I.D.B.
