Unions Flexible to Changing Position, If and Only If…
During today’s press conference, the joint unions also responded to comments made that public service and the teachers have not made any sacrifices. The unions maintain that its members have. But are they being inflexible? A.P.S.S.M. President Sharon Frazer says that until after all cost saving measures are exhausted and there is still a gap, then the unions may then be willing to reconsider its position. Here’s how she explains it.
Sharon Frazer, President, A.P.S.S.M.
“The joint unions are of the position that we may be amenable to sacrificing an additional year of increment. You notice I’ve said may, because in fact it is conditional on the understanding that government would engage in continuous dialogue with the joint unions. It would mean in fact that we would have to monitor the implementation and the results of the cost savings and revenue enhancement recommendations and proposals that have been made to government. It also means that we and government would need to ensure monitoring and fiscal discipline is put in place in relation to all of this.”
