Continued Efforts to Improve Sheep Husbandry

Efforts to improve sheep husbandry continue.  This week, the Central Farm Livestock Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Taiwan Technical Mission hosted a workshop for farmers from the Cayo District involved in sheep production.   The training focused on general sheep breeding management, herd health and nutrition, including pasture management. Facilitators included sheep project technicians and livestock officers from the Ministry and the Belize Agricultural Health Authority.  The workshop was part of the Genetic Improvement in Sheep and Goat Project which is designed to produce breeding stock to supply farmers with Dorper, Katahdin and Barbados Blackbelly breeds at affordable prices.  This year, the ministry plans to construct a new barn and acquire additional breeding stock of milk and meat goats from the United States.
