Cabinet News Update

In the excitement over Cabinet’s approval of the phased reopening of primary and secondary schools beginning in April, other news from Prime Minister John Briceño’s cabinet meeting on March twenty-third may have escaped public notice. While the government press office release did not give details, it noted that the Union Budget Consultation Team updated cabinet on its response to the unions’ latest correspondence and its intent to continue further discussions in good faith. Cabinet examined efforts by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Industry to consolidate and modernize the Company’s Law Framework in Belize, and approved the National Tourism Recovery Plan for a post-pandemic strategy. Recommendations by the Ministry of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation for the modernization of Belize’s Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System were also given the green light.  In addition, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration discussed the meeting between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Belize and the Republic of Guatemala. Both sides expressed a desire to improve the bilateral relationship, especially in the areas of trade and the implementation of the 2005 Confidence Building Measures.
