B.N.T.U. Elects New Executive

The Belize National Teachers Union has a new executive led by returning president, Senator Elena Smith.  The committee was elected during a two-day virtual convention held by the B.N.T.U., despite the president’s seat going unchallenged.  According to Smith, the executive will serve for a period of two years.

“Our highlight of the convention was the election of officers, of course, and the second matter was a discussion on the proposals from the government based on the meeting that we had on Easter Monday.  So those were two of the main issues that we discussed.  The election of officers saw myself as returning, I wasn’t challenged so I was endorsed as president for one more term.  Our national secretary, Sister Ruth Shoman was unchallenged as well so she was endorsed as the national secretary.  And then we had two persons running for the post of first vice president, brother Jorge Mejia from San Ignacio branch and brother Steven Sho from Toledo Rural branch.  Brother Mejia won that so he is now the new first vice president.  And then for the national treasurer we had Sister Shajira Lara from Orange Walk and Sister Denise Flores-Henry from Stann Creek and Sister Keisha Williams from Belize branch.  Keisha Williams was the person elected to serve as the national treasurer.  So that’s our new team of national officers for the next two years and the remaining executive officers will be elected at our first council of management after all of our branches have their meeting in September or October.”
