Cabinet Supports the 10% Salary Cut!
And Musa says while the decision to cut salaries was a tough one to make, it was fully supported by the cabinet. Musa also told reporters today that this is not the only measure being taken.
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs
“The full support of the cabinet, of course. The decision was made. We have been looking at these numbers since November twelfth. We have been crunching the numbers and looking at all the possibilities and we are still, let us be quite real and frank about this, we are nowhere close to the five hundred million dollars shortfall and so this is just one step. So, there has to be more curtailing which is why the government has in good faith engaged the unions to see where it is that we as a government can make our cuts. And we will make those cuts and we will put in place good governance measures as they have been requesting. So, overall when you look at the consultation between the government and the unions, we have been very above board and we have been agreeing to all of their requests. So, at the end of the day, when you look at the unions themselves and their leadership they have an upcoming election as well. So, I empathize with the union leaders because how do you go back to your members and deliver the news that you will have to take a ten percent cut. No one wants to do that.”
