Concert raises funds for church, school
The St. Mary’s School Feeding Program and the restoration of St. John’s Anglican Cathedral are two worthy causes which will be aided by some special music this week. The concerts will feature contemporary and classical Christian music by artists Rhonda Reid and Father James Hagan of New York City. Both have been involved in the fundraising drive for over a year after they were invited to perform in Belize by Glenn Baptist, a Belizean who resides in the Big Apple. Baptist, who visits Belize regularly, is an active member of St. Mary’s Church. He invites the general public to come out and lend its support.
Glenn Baptist, Concert Producer
“Well the concerts are for the benefit of the feeding program and for fixing the roof of the cathedral. The one at St. Mary’s is for the feeding program and that will take place tonight at seven p.m. And Miss Rhonda Reid will sing her lovely music and Father Hagan will play his organ and his beautiful music. Come out and see it and give your support for a very good cause.”
Q: “How did you all get involved with the feeding program?”
Glenn Baptist
“Well for me I come to Belize quite often and I attend St. Mary’s Church and I see what is happening. And like the good Lord told me to go and do something that is good for the people and I spoke to Father Flowers and he said no problem and so I am hooked up with them.”
Rhonda Reid, Singer
“Well I work for Macy’s in New York City and I was singing and Mr. Baptist heard me singing one day on line about a year and a half ago and walked up to me and offered me a concert in Belize.”
This evening I will be singing contemporary Christian music and also some classical music such as, “Eyes as a Sparrow,” which is sacred music and then of course we have the contemporary Christian which is, “It should have been my hands,” “The nail should have been in my hands.””
James Hagan, Organist
“Well this evening at St. Mary’s I will be playing the organ and it includes the works of Pachelbell, Cannon in D, some music by Shubert and by J.S. Bach.”
The concert at St. John’s Cathedral takes place at seven p.m. this Saturday. Although there will be no charge for both concerts, you are kindly asked to give whatever donation you can for the feeding program and the Cathedral’s restoration.
