S.I. Regulations to be Relaxed?

Kareem Musa

The Statutory Instrument which has been extended several times during the COVID-19 pandemic expires on Thursday.  The S.I. restricts movements, imposes curfew times and determines which businesses or public activities can resume, yet no new information has come out to tell the public whether or not the curfew will be extended or any other changes made.  This is even though several casinos who have met COVID standards will be allowed to reopen Thursday night.  News Five was told today that government will make an announcement on Thursday. A few days ago, Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa said that there were many factors to consider as Belize approaches the deadline.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs

“As you know we had promised on April fifteenth, there would be a revision of the statutory instrument and the regulations we have already decided at the Cabinet level that the casinos having already satisfied the request from the Ministry of Health in terms of the protocols to be instituted will be able to open on April fifteenth. We are looking at sporting event, certain sporting events. I know that football and basketball are the two that people are clamoring for but they are the ones that involve the most contact. So, there may be some relaxing when it comes to sporting and so there may be relaxing in the curfew as well. But I don’t want to say at this very moment because we have another week before April fifteenth before we make that decision.”
