Y2K fears seem to be unfounded

If events in Asia and Europe are any indication, fears of a massive worldwide Y2K catastrophe were unfounded. And as Belize and the Americas prepare to uncork the vintage champagne or cashew wine it appears that we too will greet the stroke of midnight with little in the way of unnatural disaster. In Belize City many people are in an undecided mood over whether to go deeper into debt with a fancy night out or simply stroll down to Memorial Park for a night of free festivities and fireworks. Prime Minister Said Musa will address the gathering at around eleven thirty before moving to the high rent district next door for a second round just before midnight. The official prerecorded New Year’s message will be broadcast several times over the weekend on TV and radio and you can tune in on Channel Five at noon and six p.m. on New Year’s Day. The eighteen-minute address will also be available over the Internet in both real audio and text at the government website. That address is www.belize.gov.bz.
