Restaurant caught with illegal seafood
Thanks to a sting operation by the Fisheries Department, one Belize City restaurateur has become the catch of the day after he was netted for possessing undersized shellfish. According to Fisheries Officer Errol Diaz, on Wednesday a search in the kitchen of the Chong Sing Restaurant revealed one hundred fifteen undersized conch. The restaurant’s owner Haypei Zheng was arrested and charged with possession of the undersized seafood. On Tuesday, another businessman was charged with possession of seventy-two undersized lobsters. The Fisheries Department says so far, they’ve checked twenty-two restaurants throughout the city, hoping to deter the practice of buying the smaller and cheaper produce from streetside vendors.
