Two inmates charged with prison murder

Story Picture

After two days in police custody, Mark Middleton and Glenford Gillett have been jointly charged for the murder of fellow Hattieville Prison inmate Gerald Tasher. Investigations have revealed that the attack was in retaliation for an assault that the deceased had earlier made on their friend Herman Lanza.

Christy Castillo, Police Press Officer

"Well investigations are leading us to believe that it had to do with an earlier incident that happened eight thirty that morning on the twenty-eighth, where Tasher took a battery lead, put it in his palm and hit Lanza in the face and he was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, I believe with a fractured jaw."

It is alleged the two inmates got into a misunderstanding over a plate of food.

Christy Castillo

"It seems that Tasher’s mother or some family member gave Lanza some food or stuff to give Tasher and Lanza never did give it to him, allegedly didn’t give it to him, so he hit Lanza in the face. So Lanza was rushed to the K.H.M.H. Middleton and Glenford Gillett took it upon themselves for retribution it seems, we are investigating right now, got a piece of a broken machete and chased Tasher around the yard, stabbing him repeatedly and that is why both of them have been charged for murder."

Q: "Both of them stabbed Tasher?"

Christy Castillo

"We are trying to figure out if it was both of them. Both have given their caution statement saying that it was the other one that did it. And our investigations are leading both ways so right now it is up to the courts to decide if it was both or whatever, but both of them were directly involved."

Castillo says they are also investigating reports that while Lanza and Tasher were being transported to the K.H.M.H., Lanza allegedly attacked Tasher.

Meanwhile police have another inmate in custody, the result of another stabbing that took place today at Hattieville Prison. Twenty-five year old Albert Broaster, who is serving a five year sentence for burglary, was detained after he stabbed a fellow inmate, Nero Smith in the back. The incident, which took place after nine this morning, occurred during recreation time. According to reports both inmates were nursing an old grudge and as a result Broaster attacked Smith with an unidentified weapon. Smith remains in the K.H.M.H. in a stable condition.
